What is the standard size of a license plate?

A standard US license plate is 6 by 12 inches. This size is road legal in all states. So long as it doesn’t obstruct any characters, stickers, etc, any license plate holder that fits these dimensions is good. Motorcycle and golf cart plates are a little smaller at 4 by 7 inches.
